This past year, I was privileged to be the mentor of Olivia Lin. She just graduated from Liberty High in Frisco, Texas (my hometown). Olivia selected me as her mentor for her Independent Study course. Basically, high school students reach out to a professional in a field that they are interested in pursing as a career and are mentored. Olivia’s assignment was to design a poster series of 5-8 posters for the halls of her high school. She decided that her posters would all have the message “be yourself”. In the hallways of a high school, where kids are turning into adults and trying to find themselves, I can’t think of a more appropriate message.
Above is my favorite poster from Olivia’s series. This design has recently been selected for the next year’s freshman class shirt for students and faculty. That means that over 600 will be floating around Liberty High, whose mascot is the “Redhawks”. Even though Olivia will be at UT in the fall, her message of “be yourself” lives on in the halls of the place where she learned to do just that.
You may remember this illustration of “Albert” from a previous post for the Merriman Park Estates logo. After deciding not to use the owl for the logo, I saw an opportunity to make a female owl to accompany Albert. Her name is “Alice”. These prints are now hanging in our breakfast nook, on opposites side of the window, looking at each other.
My Jeep is still rockin’ the old “dp” logo and needs to be updated. Inspired by old military badges originally seen on Jeeps, I have designed a “dp” badge logo just for the use on the sides of my Jeep. I have also incorporated a couple additional colors into this version of the “dp” logo to help tie in not only the rims, but the stock Jeep stickers and the interior. Let me know what you think.

If you guys convince me I should stay with a more traditional “dp” logo approach, this is what I have in mind.
There is something about a mustache that is very natural. A nice thick stache say, “I love nature, and I am not afraid who knows it.” Maybe this is because the stache was so popular with the hippies? So, keeping with the theme, enjoy the moosetache. Sorry if you have seen this post twice, wordpress has been have some issues lately.
If you are a graphic designer, your friends/family will request your services from time to time. I am guessing doctors/nurses get, “Hey, look at this rash” and stuff like that. Compared to rashes, dodging questionable font choices isn’t really that bad. Friends/family can present you with some ideas that are really good, and well, sometimes they are just plain bad. I am not saying I never have a bad idea, because I do. The truth is, you have to fail sometimes to realize a victory. Here are a couple of designs for friends/family that went from conception to completion in literally 20 minutes. Too bad they aren’t all this easy. My suggestion to designers who agree to work for friends/family: Design it and say, “Here it is!”
A little while back I posted this star design with a blue background and white numbers. My intention then was to hand paint this design for my son’s room. Well, I changed my mind and opted to make a print instead. This way I could have multiple colors, and let’s be honest, my hand skills can’t compare to a vector-based print. A few months back, at the agency I work for in Dallas, we needed to come up with a logo for an internal game that was called “Shopper Safari”. Basically, we were divided into groups and sent out to do research on the surrounding market regarding shopper experience. To convey both “shopper” and “safari”, I came up with a shopping cart with mud terrain tires. I don’t know about you, but I have always wanted to lift a shopping cart and put bigger tires on it. Finally, here it is.
With the weather finally getting colder here in Texas, I thought it was an appropriate time to show the next poster in the mustache series. Simply put, it is sweater weather and your upper lip should not be left out. Give that guy, or gal, the protection they need from the brisk temperatures. Enjoy the stache. Enjoy the warmth.
Do you ever feel like a good idea is right there, but you just can’t quite find it? My advice is to over think it until you run it into the ground. Then, pull it back just a hair or two. You will be rewarded with a nice hairy stache. Enjoy.
